As you hike the the forest along a small river you hear a rustling among the undergrowth on the other shore. There, on the other side of the water, behind an old moss covered oak tree, you look up to see a fawn staring back at you. The sunlight breaks through the forest canopy and shines down upon the you deer. You freeze to get a good look at the animal before it bounds away in the green woods.
Bambi has recently been in the rotation of my two-year old daughter's list of watch-a-million-times movies. So it inspired me to create a scene with a younger deer. I had actually started this forest scene some time ago and had intended it for a horse (which I may still do) but I let it sit for a while. When coming up with scenes where a young deer could live though, this particular environment seemed to fit the bill perfectly. I particularly like the way the fawn is reflected in the river at the bottom of the composition.
